Look who popped the question underwater!

Don’t you just love love?!

We do, especially underwater! The first scuba diving engagement we aided and abetted was almost exactly 10 years ago.

Jill’s brother Seth proposed to Kristi (now our sister in law) at the end of a deep dive which was part of their Advanced Open Water course in Cebu, Philippines. Glenn was their instructor and he held onto the ring box for the entire dive.

Then Glenn held on to Kristi to keep her floating up with joy when Seth proposed at the end!

And so far that’s worked out really well: they’ll be celebrating their wedding anniversary in just a few weeks and have 2 amazing daughters!

So far in 2022 we’ve had two fantastic couples get engaged during trips with us.

The first one was back in January.

Steve had called months earlier to book a very special private scuba diving trip with his girlfriend Dana here in the Florida Keys.

But when the day finally arrived, Mother Nature had other plans and we just couldn’t get out to the reef.

We put Plan B into action and Capt. Glenn took them to explore the mangroves and the bay…and then on a deserted sandy beach, Steve popped the question in front of a gorgeous Florida Keys sunset.

The second proposal was just last month.

This time the weather cooperated!

Glenn led the dive personally, bringing the couple through his favorite swim-through to a special spot on the Elbow reef. After the tiniest moment of panic when he couldn’t find the box in his BCD pocket, Michael got down on one knee (great buoyancy control!) and showed Alex what was inside.

What happened next was magic that you’ve got to see for yourself:

Watch the video here. I’m not crying, you’re crying!

All of this was followed by a bottle of bubbles on the boat with Michael’s folks who watched the whole thing snorkeling above. It was a happy happy day.

So happy that the Mom of the Groom-to-be posted this on TripAdvisor that same day:

We don’t have wedding dates yet but have already offered both couples a free dive on us when they come back as married couples!

Know anyone who’s thinking about popping the question underwater in the Florida Keys?

Here are five tips:

  1. Give us a few days. If you’ve got more than one day available here in Key Largo, let us know and we’ll try to block off some extra days, just in case of wind or other factors.
  2. Be happy with Plan B. If the weather just won’t let up, don’t delay the engagement! We do have that very romantic beach as a back-up. Did you see that video?
  3. Bubbles are standard: Let us know if you don’t want champagne chilling on board afterward.
  4. Listen to your Captain. Although he hasn’t personally proposed to any underwater* Glenn runs a tight ship when it comes to engagements! He’s very trustworthy if you want him to hold the ring box. And knows just the right angle for the GoPro at just the right spot with a sandy bottom with at our nearby reef. And he’s not afraid to shoo away other boats and potentially photobombing divers!
  5. Plan ahead. At certain times of the year, our schedule fills up earlier than others. If you want to pop the question over spring break, give us a call in January. Also give us two months’ notice if you’re looking at a holiday weekend.
