Learn to Dive in Key Largo

PADI Open Water diver certification

Your private group of up to 4 student divers can become certified as PADI Open Water (OW) divers at the pace, timing and dates that work for you.

After learning and reviewing key knowledge concepts and a bit of practice in the pool, your scuba diving course culminates in open-water training dives on a private charter trip. The focus is on getting you safely in the water, building your comfort and confidence at sites that are ideal for practicing skills, with no rush.

What to expect:

1. All good things start with paperwork, and diving is no different!

Your health and safety is the highest priority for all of us in the diving business, and PADI’s Divers Medical Questionnaire is a comprehensive review of possible concerns. If there’s any question, your doctor must review and sign off before going further.

2. Theory, yuck! Actually, it’s pretty cool.

Before you get wet, you’ll need to spend a few hours working through a fun online course from PADI at home. You can do it in your socks!

Tackle a chapter or 2 whenever you have time. In fact theoretically the online portion can be done in one long evening but it’s better doing it over 4 or 5 nights, one chapter at a time. You read a section then do a little quiz knowledge review before moving on to the next section.

Once you get to Key Largo, Instructor Glenn will talk through any questions you may have and administer a short 50-question exam in person. We want to make sure everyone is comfortable and understands.

3. Pool training sessions:  Once the online learning and review is complete, we get you situated in dive gear from our loaner locker, teach you how to set it up, and go to the Key Largo swimming pool.

There is a short swimming assessment then finally it’s time for that first magical breath under water!

Instructor Glenn goes through all the skills you need to learn how to dive one by one, applying the knowledge you learned on line. This is the practical application in a controlled environment. A time to learn and perfect the skills!

4. Open water training dives: For this we set aside two half-day private charters on our boat and start diving in the open ocean.

We do the same skills again, but this time in open water. We are sure to see some fish and maybe even a turtle or two! Each dive about 30 to 40 minutes long.

Our Key Largo reefs are teeming with fish but also relatively shallow, making them easy and interesting places for training. Sea conditions vary from day to day, giving new divers important experience to draw on later.

At the end of 4 successful training dives with Instructor Glenn, you will be a certified Open Water diver!

Advance your Dive Training

PADI Advanced Open Water

Good news. No more pool sessions needed to become an Advanced Open Water Diver!

Better news. The online eLearning probably won’t take you as long as the Open Water course did. You’ll still need to set aside some time to do that before starting the training dives here in Key Largo.

And the best news? You get to choose some of your training dives based on what you love most about scuba diving.

What to expect:

PADI requires that Advanced Open Water students complete a total of 5 Adventure Dives with an Instructor. Two of them are mandatory: Deep and Navigation and then you get to chose three other Adventure Dives from a long list.

Instructor Glenn usually recommends: Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck Dive and Search and Recovery.
