Unfortunately, it looks like COVID-19 related travel restrictions will keep lots of us out of the water for a while. It’s like a really REALLY long surface interval — that period between two dives that allows the body to recover before descending again safely — and we all know how those can drag on when we’re eager to dive!
Inspired by the small yet important tasks divers do between dives, here’s our list of ways to stay busy, pass the time, and even be a better diver until we can blow bubbles together again:
1 Change tanks: Between dives, every diver’s most basic task is to switch to a full air tank and recheck all our equipment is safely set up for the next dive. At home, pull that gear out of the back closet and the plastic tubs in the garage and take stock. Anything need to be cleaned, serviced or replaced? The local dive store will be super-happy to help us out. And while we’re at it, let’s make a clean sweep of that sunscreen stash! Toss out the old empty, expired and non-reefsafe sunscreens and order a fresh supply so you’re ready to go next time (our favorite is Stream2Sea).
2 Log the dive: The divers with the best memories are those that make and keep great notes about conditions, sites and sealife. Why not use this period to sort through and organize your logbooks and photos from past dives? It’s easier than ever to digitize dive data and pictures – or try your hand at a video editor to make a fun movie of your most memorable dives. 3 Identify that funny-looking fish: On almost every dive, we notice a new fish or one doing something we never noticed before, and pull out the fish ID book as soon as we’re on the surface. Wouldn’t it be cool to be that person in your group who can name that fish of the top of your head? Well, REEF Environmental Education Foundation, located right here in Key Largo Florida, has an extensive collection of online training sessions to teach divers and snorkelers how to identify sea creatures of all types in all parts of the world. There’s no cost to become a member and get access to all of the ‘Fishinar’ archives.
4 Refresh yourself. On Lucky Fish Scuba trips, everybody gets a cup of water and some healthy snacks between each dive or dip in the water to make sure we stay energized for the next adventure. While we’re stuck at home, let’s stay fit for diving by eating healthy, getting all of our steps in or even starting a new strength routine.
5 Get briefed for the next dive! Just like we listen up to the captain or dive master describing the conditions and features at the next site, we can use this time to plan our next adventures. Even if we’re not sure when we’ll be able to travel freely again, now is a great time to revise the old bucket list or start working toward a new certification level or specialty course.
